General comments:
There is an urgent need to look for this species in Middlesex wherever there are established Aspen trees. It may well now be extinct in this county.

Hertfordshire Notes:
There is a long and drawn-out adult flight period from early May to the end of August in Hertfordshire, but in keeping with the situation elsewhere there are no peaks. This and the appearance of apparently freshly emerged moths throughout the flight period suggests that adults continuously emerge throughout the summer rather than the first out being particularly long-lived. Confusion is possible with the Figure of Eighty, especially amongst the darker forms. Various degrees of melanism are exhibited by the present species in Hertfordshire though neither very bright non-melanics nor really dark examples have been seen and most are rather intermediate examples that defy naming. Young larvae found on Aspen at Hoddesdon were exhibited at the South London Entomological and Natural History Society meeting on 28th June 1950 by T. R. Eagles (Proceedings of the South London Entomological and Natural History Society 1950 - : 11).

Middlesex Notes:
Extremely Local and Rare, perhaps Extinct. Historically reported from from Ruislip, Perivale Wood and the south-west Middlesex Crematorium, but apparently now absent from these areas. The single modern record is from Kempton Nature Reserve in 2022 and is presumed to be a wanderer.
