Immigrant or vagrant..

We have just four records of this moth, from the Rothamsted Estate, Harpenden on 14th July 1948 and 13th August 1976, from a garden in Hemel Hempstead in 1994 and from a garden in Digswell on 17th July 1999. The 1976 record was on an exceptionally late date at the end of the long hot summer of that year during which many unusual sightings of moths across Britain were attributed to wandering stimulated by the weather conditions. The two more recent records defy explanation, but are most unlikely to represent nearby breeding populations. Plant (1993) records the last record in the Greater London area as being made in 1886. The moth is typically associated with heathland in lowland Britain.
