Widespread, but rather local resident.

Records suggest that distribution is unaltered over the past hundred years. On the other hand numbers have declined drastically over the past twenty of thirty years. Foster (1937) had it as 'Common everywhere, often abundant' and I personally recall that on mild evenings as recently as the 1980s it was normal to encounter hundreds of individuals flying at dusk. Today, you might see one or two if the vegetation is disturbed by torchlight. Of course, the situation might reverse itself, but for the present it is somewhat worrying and the moth could easily be lost altogether from some sites if population levels falls so low that they are no longer sustainable.
