The separation of Lead Belle from July Belle is almost always a matter that calls for dissection of the genital apparatus. Several published reports from Hertfordshire are erroneous and are known to actually refer to the July Belle. Subspecies umbrifera (Heydemann) is the English subspecies of the Lead Belle. In Scotland it is replaced by ssp. scotica (Cockayne); the nominate ssp. mucronata (Scopoli) is found only in mainland Europe.
