Gibbs (1905) lists the first county record from 'near Sparrowswick Wood', where an example was taken by Alice Dickinson in 1904. Gibbs notes that it is primarily coastal, but found inland 'not uncommonly on cretaceous formations' [chalk] and adds that it is recorded for Middlesex. The latter statement is true: it is noted from Harrow in 1876 (de Worms, 1957) and from Enfield Chase in 1891 (Cockerell, 1892) - both rather surprising records in unsuitable habitat. Writing in 2006, I noted that it is not recorded from Essex at all and in adjacent Bedfordshire there are just two unconfirmed records from 1951 and 1956. It seems sensible to treat all our own moths as vagrants.
