General comments:
Widespread resident.

In the late 1990s reports of Red-green Carpet began to increase and the species is now found across both our counties and usually in raised number. The fact that adults hibernate accounts for the winter records. However, the Red-green Carpet must be considered alongside Autumn Green Carpet, which is now apparently extinct in Hertfordshire, but which was evidently quite widespread here at the end of the nineteenth century. The two are remarkably similar in appearance. The 1939 edition of Richard South's The Moths of the British Isles suggests that the two species had similar ranges in Britain in the early part of the twentieth century, but I can find no evidence to support this in Hertfordshire. Gibbs (1905) lists the first county record from Tring, where a larva was taken in 1904 by A. T. Goodson and the adult reared. Gibbs continues by saying that 'Mr. Barrett in British Lepidoptera says that it occurs in Cambs, Beds, and Essex. It is often abundant in its favourite haunts, chiefly in the southern counties, and in such localities comes freely to ivy-bloom'. Barrett's volumes were published from 1893 to 1907. Foster (1937) lists only this same record. Both authors ignore the apparent mention of this species on the Haileybury School list (Bowyer, 1888) as well as the 1880s record from the Sandridge area by Griffith; both are thought more likely to refer to Autumn Green Carpet, but even if I am incorrect the overall situation is not altered.
