General comments:
Widespread but extremely local resident. Declining. Species of Conservation Concern.

This moth flies primarily in July and August in our area. Records from May and October have all, on checking carefully, been found to include misidentified Common Marbled Carpet. Although the two can usually be separated fairly easily, both are very variable species and so the extra information that outside the July/August window they are more likely to be Common Marbled Carpet may help some people. Foster (1937) reported that it was 'Common everywhere', but that may have been an oversimplification of a distribution not too different from that which we see today. This species seems to be in decline.
