Some examples of the Broken-barred Carpet might be confused with Small Phoenix by beginners; both are common species in the county. Not all Broken-barred Carpets have the central bar of the forewing broken. In the London Area it is about half and half (Plant, 1993) but we have no numerical data for the frequency of either form in Hertfordshire.
