General comments:
Widespread but somewhat local resident.

The slightly earlier flight period of this species helps to distinguish it from July Highflier, although there is a considerable overlap of the two. The May Highflier appears to be genuinely local in our area, doubtless constrained by the lack of alder trees. Though it rarely appears in large number it has certainly vanished from several site lists in the last ten or so years and appears to be declining in our area.
