Triphosa dubitata

(Linnaeus, 1758) 1790 / 70.123

General comments:
Extremely local resident. Declining. Species of Conservation Concern.

This is typically a species of woodland edge habitats on chalk downland. It was first listed for Hertfordshire from the Sandridge area (Griffith, 1884), but evidently has never been a common moth with us. Larvae were found to be common on Buckthorn plants at the Haberdashers' Aske's School from 1979 onwards and adults moths were reared (Barry Goater). Sadly, nobody seems to have found the larvae in our area since then!
