Widespread but local resident.

Separation of this species from Small Rivulet must not be performed on the basis of size, since both species vary in size considerably. The character given in Skinner (1984; 1998) works on all Hertfordshire and Middlesex material examined. The absence of woodlands or hedgerows with Red Campion in parts of the area is reflected in the distribution map, but there is a reasonable probability that the species is partly overlooked in Middlesex. There is slowly emerging evidence that the species may be in decline here, since it is reported as having vanished from a number of sites where it was presumed established.
