Swallow-tailed Moth
Ourapteryx sambucaria

(Linnaeus, 1758) 1922 / 70.243

General comments:
Widespread resident.

The larvae of the Swallow-tailed Moth are 'stick caterpillars', camouflaged to resemble twigs, and can be very hard to find. If using a beating tray it is a good idea not to be too hasty to shake out the debris - allow it time to start moving! A small second generation of adults in October/November is beginning to show in the flight chart; this very recent phenomenon is apparently repeated in other southern English counties.

Recorded in 36 (88%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 2023.
