General comments:
Widespread resident.

The moth appears in October in most years and is on the wing more or less continuously in mild spells between then and February/March. The males exhibit many colour forms, but unusually for a 'macro' moth, a high proportion of the modern records are of the distinctive caterpillar; this is reflected in the several foodplant records.

Recorded in 36 (88%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 2024.
