Barred Red
Hylaea fasciaria

(Linnaeus, 1758) 1962 / 70.284

General comments:
Widespread but local resident.

It seems likely that pines other than Scots Pine are used by larvae and the moth is frequent, though almost always as singletons, at light traps across the area. The striking green aberration prasinaria [D.& S.], does not appear to have been recorded in our area, but a female example of ab. grisearia Fuchs came to a garden light trap in Bishops Stortford on 24th June 1988. An exceptionally late specimen at St Albans on 25th September 2006 was green with a reddish median fascia.

Recorded in 26 (63%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1893.
Last Recorded in 2024.
