Hertfordshire Notes: A glance at the map in Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland shows that this species has retreated westwards from many sites formerly occupied in the east of Britain, where it is now a rarity. It is regarded as extinct in Hertfordshire and all known records are listed, as follows: Hertford, illustrated by J. F. Stephens (1829. Illustrations of British Entomology : 90); Sandridge area (Griffith, 1884); Harpenden, 1880 (Willis); Harpenden, 1885 (J. Hopkinson, Transactions of the Hertfordshire Natural History Society and Field Club : 138); 'Local' [in the Cheshunt area] (Boyd, 1901) - note that Boyd's comprehensive list does not include the similar and more common Thumatha senex; Hitchin (Foster, 1934), Tring, Berkhamsted and Chorleywood (Foster, 1937). Few of these can be precisely located and so the presentation of a distribution map would be misleading.
