Wood Tiger
Parasemia plantaginis

(Linnaeus, 1758) 2056 / 72.025

General comments:
Extinct resident.

The Wood Tiger was formerly resident in the south-east of Britain, but has retreated westwards and is now absent from the region. One was caught near the Monument on the Ashridge Estate in 1921 and is given in Foster (1937) who also lists 'Berkhamsted School list'. It is thought that these two reports may relate to the same record. Berkhamsted School itself lies outside the vice-county boundary in the 'neck' of the 'Hudnall Hook', but Ashridge Monument is within Hertfordshire. One was taken 'on the outskirts of St John's Wood' (between Wood End and Walkern) in the 1940s (J. Birdsall). The single Middlesex record is from Mill Hill School. The site is listed rather ambiguously as "Harrow, Mill Hill School" and it is unclear if this refers to one or two places. Harrow itself is approximately one tetrad further west than the Mill Hill School record that we have mapped.
