Garden Tiger
Arctia caja

(Linnaeus, 1758) 2057 / 72.026

General comments:
Widespread but extremely local resident.

Seriously declined in distributional range from the end of the 1980s. A numerical decline occurred in parallel (approx 1991 to 2013): The figures below show the number of records (not moth numbers) in the database for the year shown. A slight recovery in numbers is detected post-2000, but this does not seem to go hand in hand with a return to former sites, the vast majority of which remain vacant.

The cause of the decline has been shown to be a consequence of climate change. In simple terms, the Garden Tiger has been lost from areas where January is warmer than February. Thus, it is still found 'up north' and in coastal districts, but has all but vanished from central southern England and south-east inland areas. Occasional arrivals of the moth at light traps are to be expected, as microclimate features will vary, but the overall trend is downwards.
