Confusion is possible with light examples of Pale-shouldered Brocade. Gibbs (1896) states that a record from Gladstone Road, Watford, by S. H. Spencer in 1893, was the first Hertfordshire record, but he evidently overlooked the fact that the moth is illustrated from a Hertford specimen by J. F. Stephens in Illustrations of British Entomology, published in 1829. However, the Light Brocade has always been a rather locally distributed moth in Hertfordshire. It seems to prefer calcareous soils, though it is by no means restricted to the chalk and is present on the Chalky Boulder Clay and elsewhere.
