General comments:
Immigrant. Former resident.

The records seem to suggest that the Blossom Underwing was well-established as a resident at Bricket Wood and the Watford area in the late nineteenth century, although only one, from Watford on 10th April 1895, is dated. Outlying records may suggest a wider distribution that affected the Ashridge Estate and perhaps other oak-dominated areas of the south-west of the county. More recently, Hodgson (1939) writes that J. H. Bell reported it as fairly common at light in the Ashridge district from 1932 to 1936. At Totteridge, where a garden trap was run from 1954 to 1980, one was caught during 1955 but there were no others. It was recorded in a garden in Watford in 1953 and then at Copse Wood, Ruislip in 1959, after which there are no further reports until one at Berkhamsted Common in May 1980. There follows another prolonged gap with no records until 2011. Nineteen records since then almost certainly relate to primary immigrants. There is an extremely small possibility that this species might remain an overlooked resident in the woodlands of Southern Hertfordshire, or even the North London Woodlands belt as it might be confused by beginners with reddish forms of the Common Quaker.
