Early Grey
Xylocampa areola

(Esper, 1789) 2243 / 73.069

General comments:
Widespread and common resident.

Though one of the commonest of the spring species, the Early Grey is missed by some people as it does not usually fly until after midnight. During March and April it is necessary to set up traps quite early for a relatively poor return and some people prefer not to stay out for that length of time. The larvae have adapted to garden varieties of Honeysuckle (Lonicera).

Recorded in 35 (85%) of 41 10k Squares.
