General comments:
Widespread resident.

The Chestnut is often the first moth seen in any given year, since it is prone to activity during mild spells throughout its winter hibernation period. However, rarely more than one or two appear in winter catches, whilst in the spring moth traps may catch double figures; this perhaps suggests that the adults hibernate singly and away from their fellows. Confusion of worn moths in the spring is possible with Dark Chestnut; whilst the latter is always 'dark', some Chestnuts may be similarly coloured and the shape of the wing is the only reliable diagnostic character in the field
