Widespread resident.

Almost all places where there are trees will produce the Dun-bar moth, which appears in a variety of colour forms, some more striking than others. The specimen of ab. badiofasciata Teich figured on plate 36, figure 31 in Skinner (1998), in which the central trapezoid band is entirely black was taken at Broxbourne Wood on 19th August 1984; the specimen of the equally uncommon ab. nigra Tutt shown on plate 36, figure 30, was also taken in Broxbourne Wood, on 4th June 1989. A further ab. badiofasciata was caught by myself and Charles Watson in Lucas Wood, near Stevenage, on 23rd July 2001.
