Some examples of the Clouded-bordered Brindle are confusingly similar to Reddish Light Arches, and in calcareous sites both species can be found together during June. Most semi-natural grasslands of reasonable size are likely to support this species, including woodland clearings and rides. There is a tendency towards favouring damp grasslands, but not all records are from wet areas. Regularly mown swards and recently disturbed habitats, including most roadside verges, appear unsuitable. The more or less uniformly reddish-brown ab. combusta Haworth occurs occasionally, but appears to represent only about 10 per cent of the population in Hertfordshire.
