Typical forms of Dusky Brocade appear to form only a small proportion of the population in Hertfordshire and when they arrive at light traps sometime cause confusion. The bulk of the population, perhaps 80 per cent, conforms to f. obscura Haworth, though identification and reporting of the forms is rarely undertaken and some examples of the intermediate f. submissa Treitschke are probably written down as obscura. Nationally, this moth is said to be declining in numbers; a very small decline in number of reports is noted in our area from about 2018 but is perhaps in keeping with natural swings.
