The Confused has a north-western distribution in Britain and is practically unknown south-east of the Severn - Humber line. Gibbs (1904a) records that one was taken at a light inside The Grange, Hitchin, by A. H. Foster in 1902. Gibbs was clearly aware of the significance of the record, noting that it was a 'west-country hill-frequenting species' that was entirely unexpected in Hertfordshire, but added that C. G. Barrett had confirmed the identification. It had initially been misidentified [by Foster?] as Mamestra brassicae - the Cabbage Moth.
