General comments:
Widespread resident.

This species is on most garden lists and is rarely absent from lists made on recording trips at the correct time of year. The adult moth varies considerably on the basic theme of dark inner and light outer halves to the forewings and in some examples this distinction is practically lost so that the wings are near uniform. Many varieties occur in our county, but no detailed record appears to have been kept.
