Common Rustic
Mesapamea secalis

(Linnaeus, 1758) 2343 / 73.169

General comments:
Widespread resident.

All examples require genitalia dissection for correct naming - and both species often fly together. All Hertfordshire examples that conform to the pattern exhibited by the specimen at Figure 2 on Plate 38 of Skinner (1984; 1998), in which the entire hind edge of the forewing is pale and the entire costal edge is brown, have proved on dissection to be this species. However, specimens with an identical pattern, but with an all-over reddish-brown tinge to the wing tend to be Lessers. The more unicolourous examples, with or without a prominent white discal spot (Figures 1 and 3 in Skinner), are a mixture of both species. The Common Rustic is numerically abundant in comparison with the Lesser Common Rustic.
