General comments:
Extremely local resident; vagrant.

Our first report of Silky Wainscot is from Tring in 1905 (A. T. Goodson), given in Gibbs (1906) and repeated by Foster (1937). This is also the Hertfordshire record mentioned by South (The Moths of the British Isles. Series 1, page 300). Subsequent records are from the Rothamsted Estate on 24th June 1935 (C. B. Williams) and 10th August 1991 (Adrian Riley) then Rye Meads, 17th June 2000, Wilstone Reservoir, 1st July 2000 and Lemsford Springs, 15th July 2002 all recorded by me. Since about that time, we have discovered the moth to be an extremely localised resident in wetland sites across the two counties. On balmy summer evenings adults may take to the wing and disperse over a wide area. Larger and long-established artificial wetland habitats may be colonised in this way. It should be pointed out that in the majority of these, the foodplant is present only by virtue of human intervention. Here, accidental importation of the early stages is a possibility, although this does appear to result in successful long-term colonisation.
