Widespread resident.

Elsewhere in Britain, the caterpillars thrive on a variety of willow species including Weeping Willow. An example of ab. nigra Cockayne (= f. nigrata Lempke) in which the forewings are entirely black was taken at Totteridge on 30th September 1962. Further examples were captured there on 14th September 1969 and 29th September 1970, but none appear to have been recorded elsewhere in the county.
