Oak Hook-tip
Watsonalla binaria

(Hufnagel, 1767) 1646 / 65.002

General Comments:
Widespread and numerically common.

Hertfordshire Notes:
According to Plant (2008: The Moths of Hertfordshire) although restricted as a caterpillar to oak trees, adult males of this moth frequently turn up in garden light traps in areas where the nearest oak tree appears to be some distance away, suggesting either that the males may wander considerably (unlike the closely related Barred Hook-tip), or that they are able to thrive on small, isolated oaks in gardens and other habitats. Females are less often seen, though they do come to light occasionally.Plant (2021) adds that an increasing abundance has been noted, though it has always been
widespread and common with us.

Middlesex Notes:
Widespread and local, as in Hertfordshire, but with a mysterious blank zone on the eastern boundary - along the north-south line of the Lea Valley.

Recorded in 36 (88%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 2024.
