General comments:
Widespread but rather local in Hertfordshire.
Absent from most of Middlesex apart from in the extreme north west.

Hertfordshire Notes: This moth is probably under-recorded, because it rarely travels far and so is poorly represented in light trap catches in gardens; a light trap placed thirty or so feet from a Beech tree may not attract any Barred Hook-tips whilst a light placed closely against the trunk of the same tree may catch several. Although adults do come to mercury vapour lights, actinic traps may work better and I have, for example, recorded large numbers of the moth in Bishops Stortford Cemetery by placing an actinic trap at the base of one of the trees that line the road behind a brick wall - just a few inches from the passing public on their way home from the pub! A record from 'Tring, woods near Ashridge House', on 11th June 1887 by A. E. Gibbs in Transactions of the Hertfordshire Natural History Society and Field Club : l [= Roman 50]) appears likely to fall on the Buckinghamshire side of the border and so our earliest Hertfordshire record is that from Watford made by S. H. Spencer in 1895.

Middlesex Notes:
Extremely local; confined to the north-west of the county. Likely to extend eastwards via the North London woodlands to the Lea Valley but if so will probably be found only very locally.

Recorded in 23 (56%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1895.
Last Recorded in 2023.
