General comments:
Widespread in Hertfordshire, becoming more localised in Middlesex to the south.

Hertfordshire Notes: Although there are clearly two generations of adults in a given year, these appear to overlap and it is possible to find adults continuously from mid April to the start of September. Our earliest record is the illustration of a specimen from Hertford in J. F. Stephens Illustrations of British Entomology: 6 (published in 1834). In his 1937 county list, Foster lists it from several localities without comment and the implication is that it was widespread and common at that time. Ian Lorimer noted it as decreasing from 1970 to 1979 at his garden light in Totteridge, but any such decline clearly did not continue and the moth is a familiar sight in most areas of the county and probably under-recorded in at least some of the blank patches in the map.

Middlesex Notes:
In stark contrast to the Scalloped Hook-tip (Falcaria lacertinaria), also a birch-feeder, this present species extends southwards across Middlesex, although it is rather local in that county. The reasons why the two closely-related species have such different distributions calls for investigation.
