Peach Blossom
Thyatira batis

(Linnaeus, 1758) 1652 / 65.008

General comments:
Widespread - potentially ubiquitous in large swathes of the two counties, though strangely rare in the extreme south-east of Middlesex where brambles do still persist in a few places.

Hertfordshire Notes:
It is of interest to compare the distribution of this species with that of the next; whilst the Peach Blossom is apparently restricted to bramble, the Buff Arches can also feed on raspberry, hazel and hawthorn. Given the desolate nature of much of northern Hertfordshire it appears possible that the thinner distribution of the Peach Blossom in that part of Hertfordshire may be genuine. Elsewhere in the county, this distinctive moth is almost invariably expected in light traps, whether in the garden or 'out and about'. Larvae were located on bramble at Northaw Great Wood on 17th July 1969 (Barry Goater); all other reports are of adults.

Middlesex Notes:
Broadly similar distribution to the Buff Arches, with which it shares the larval foodplant, being widespread across all except the densely urbanised south-east sector.

Recorded in 32 (78%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 2023.
