Grass Emerald
Pseudoterpna pruinata

(Walker, 1863) 1665 / 70.297

General comments:
Extinct former resident.

British examples of this are all referable to subspecies atropunctaria Walker; the nominate subspecies is found on mainland Europe. The last Hertfordshire report of the Grass Emerald was in 1999. The bulk of records are from the 1930s and 1940s when it was recorded regularly in RIS traps in the Harpenden area, but by 1960 reports had all but ceased (111 of 144 records originate prior to 1960). Records persisted in this mid-county area to the 1980s, but away from here most sightings appear to relate to wandering singletons. Enfield and Ruislip are the sites for the two Middlesex records.

Recorded in 9 (22%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 1999.
