General comments:
Widespread but local resident.

The Large Emerald is mostly found in woodlands, and then usually in association with mature Birch trees. It usually attends light traps in very low numbers from midnight onwards and in spite of a perception that it is rare, the map shows that it is actually quite widespread. Fresh examples are striking, but after they have been on the wing for a few days they fade to near white and may not be immediately recognised by the inexperienced.
