Widespread resident, but avoiding densely urban areas.

In the eighteenth century the colloquial name for chenopodiata was not Shaded Broad-bar, but 'The Aurelian's Curse'. The Aurelian Society was Britain's first entomological organisation and the moth was so named because it was apparently so abundant that it kept getting caught when other quarry was being chased! Today, the Shaded Broad-bar is not uncommon and in some years can be quite numerous, but the absence of large areas of unimproved grassland and other semi-natural habitat means that we are unlikely to be able to justify re-applying that original name. However, a significant numerical decline over the past 40 years in Britain appears to have been at least slowed in our area; in 2022 and the moth is not uncommon.
