Widespread resident.

Typical Small Phoenix, the form that was originally described as this species, has a solid central band across the fore wing and appears scarce in our area, perhaps forming as little as 15 - 20 per cent of the population. Far more common is f. insulata Haworth, in which two white lines cross the band and isolate a small dark oval area. This familiar form could perhaps be confused by inexperienced observers with some of the forms of Broken-barred Carpet in May and June, though that species does not fly at the same time as the second adult generation of Small Phoenix.
