Confusion is possible with Spruce Carpet (T. britannica). Even in older literature this confusion exists. For example, J. F. Stephens illustrates "Thera britannica" (as variata), from Hertford in his Illustrations of British Entomology, published in 1829, and Foster (1937) gives several localities, also as variata. However, Fryer (1948) suggests that these are all open to question and may all relate to T. obeliscata. The best guide is perhaps the shape of the segments of the male antennae, but some females may not be separable without dissection. The moth is very often found where neither Scots Pine nor Spruce grows and there must surely be an undiscovered alternative foodplant.
