Mottled Grey
Colostygia multistrigaria

(Haworth, 1809) 1775 / 70.101

General comments:
Extremely local resident.

We had long feared that the Mottled Grey was extinct in Hertfordshire. Although formerly widespread, as the map shows, it had not been seen since 1939, when it was 'well distributed and fairly common at light' at Ashridge by Hodgson in 1939. The last records in the adjacent county of Essex were in 1974 and although not searched for there it was considered extinct in the county by Goodey (2004). The last Bedfordshire report was in 1947 (Arnold, 1997). However, my capture of a single male during a search specifically targeted at this species in Hexton Chalk Pit on 30th March 2002 gives hope that it is merely under-recorded because of its very early flight period. Nevertheless, with a reasonably large number of light traps now operating all year across much of the county, the absence of reports is worrying. Cockerell’s 1898 list mentions Mill Hill and Hampstead only for Middlesex.
