General comments:
Widespread but local resident and also Vagrant.

As a resident this moth is confined to the chalky areas of Hertfordshire, but it is also very widely reported across both Hertfordshire and Middlesex in areas of apparently unsuitable geology. Of course, the moth is in reality far more likely to be following the larval foodplant, which happens to prefer the chalk. Buckthorn plants are rather widespread in domestic gardens - there was a campaign across the wider London area during the 1980s to establish this plant in order to attract Brimstone butterflies (). The wide distribution of the Brown Scallop may reflect this. Beginners should note that males and females can appear quite different.
