General comments:
Extinct resident - perhaps Vagrant.

Like many of the fairly non-descript pugs, this species is considered to be under-recorded and more widespread than the map indicates. It is nevertheless a scarce beast. It is listed for the Sandridge area (Griffith, 1884). Foster (1937 Hertfordfordshire list) gives only this Sandridge record, suggesting that even if the habitat and foodplants were in place the moth was perhaps not finding them. Later reports are few and far between, but larvae were found on Common Cow Wheat at the Danemead Wood area of the Broxbourne Woods NNR in 1979. In Essex, to our east, it was last recorded in 1974 and is now considered extinct there. One male, a great surprise, arrived in my garden light trap at Bishops Stortford on 18th July 2003 (identified from genitalia); this is clearly not a resident example and the capture is seen as an indication of vagrancy. Nationally, Lead-coloured Pug has declined and is currently mostly a species of the south-west and Wales.
