General comments:
Widespread, near ubiquitous resident.

One of the earliest pugs to appear each year and often recognised at once by its slightly larger size. It will probably be present on every site list. The more or less unmarked melanic ab. hirschkei Bastelberger forms in the order of 40 per cent of the Hertfordshire population, but few people report captured forms so the figure is an estimate. The handful of June records was made in 2000 and 2003 with a single very late report at Wheathampstead on 6th July 2002 (Trevor Chapman). In Middlesex, one seriously late (or early?) moth came to actinic light at Parliament Hill on 15th November 2010.

Recorded in 35 (85%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1900.
Last Recorded in 2024.
