General comments:
Extremely local and declining resident. Species of Conservation Concern.

Past records indicate this to have been a frequent species up to at least the 1950s, although plotting records on as map does not in fact support the notion that it was widespread. Certainly it has declined recently in terms of numbers, but we do not have adequate records to claim that the decline coincided with the Dutch Elm disease epidemic of the 1970s (though this seems at least likely to have been a contributing factor). Though English Elm is eaten by the larvae, present populations appear to be associated with Wych Elm - a species that generally survived the disease. The undisputed decline in population level may have been governed by other factors. Records exist for only five of the sixteen years form 2007 to 2023 and for each of those five there is but a single record. This is a species that is potentially heading for extinction in our two counties.
