Early Thorn
Selenia dentaria

(Fabricius, 1775) 1917 / 70.237

General comments:
Widespread resident.

The males and females of Early Thorn are of different appearance and both differ between the spring and summer generation. All rest with wings firmly closed over the back in the manner of a butterfly - a fact that easily separates them from the Purple Thorn which flies at the same time, but rests more like a Skipper with wings partly open.

Recorded in 36 (88%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 2023.
