Bordered White
Bupalus piniaria

(Linnaeus, 1758) 1954 / 70.276

General comments:
Widespread but local resident.

The colour of the forewing of the Bordered White adults differs with sex and latitude. In the south of Britain, most males are yellow and most females are orange whilst in Scotland males tend to be white and the females brown. There is almost no information on Hertfordshire colour forms, but all the records that I have confirmed here are of yellow males.Unfortunately, the living moth very rarely opens its wings for us to see! The distribution is doubtless constrained by the availability of pine woodland.
