The listing by R. W. Bowyer (1888) for the Haileybury College area perhaps relates to Hertford Heath, where Heather grows in a small area today and probably grew over a larger area then. Foster's (1937) list mentions old reports from Northchurch Common, over in the west, where suitable breeding habitat would have been present in plenty. The two records, together, perhaps support a former residency, though the species is without doubt extinct now.The only other Hertfordshire record is from Bricket Wood by Spencer, listed in Gibbs (1902). There are no other Hertfordshire records known and none from MIddlesex.
