(Linnaeus, 1758) 1981 / 69.003

General comments:
Widespread and perhaps ubiquitous. No evidence of any alteration in status over the years.
Skinner (1984; 1998) suggests that this species is usually single-brooded with occasional autumn generations; this is not the case in Hertfordshire, where a second generation has been the norm from 2000 to 2006 and is usually larger (in terms of moth numbers). The chart confuses the matter by combining years; if individual year records were to be plotted there would be a gap of about two weeks between the two peaks. A female was watched for about ten minutes, between 14.50 and 15.00 hours, by Andrew Middleton, egg-laying during daylight at Broxbourne Wood, on 2 August 2002. The moth was watched fluttering around the tip of a birch tree, approximately 20 feet tall, periodically stopping to lay eggs.
