General comments: Exceptionally rare immigrant, not seen in our area since 1953.
Hertfordshire Notes: Piffard (1876. Entomologist's Monthly Magazine : 138), reports 'I have just seen a specimen of C. nerii (the Oleander Hawk), taken by a gardener on the 15th October, in a garden near here, in the Alma Road. It is now in the possession of - Pitts, Esq., House Surgeon at the Infirmary of Hemel Hempstead'. Durrant (1888) repeats the record giving the same (correct) date, but Fry (1876. Transactions of the Watford Natural History Society : 174) gives a different date, 13th October 1876, and adds that the specimen is a male. In subsequent reports, the specimen reportedly passed into the collection of G. T. Porritt of either Leeds (according to W. C. Boyd in Entomologist's Monthly Magazine : 147) or Huddersfield (according to A H. Foster, 1937). There are no other Hertfordshire records of this large and colourful hawk-moth.
