Small Elephant Hawk-moth
Deilephila porcellus

(Linnaeus, 1758) 1992 / 69.017

General comments:
Widespread but local, showing signs of increasing in abundance since the early years of the millennium.

Hertfordshire Notes:
Although rather locally distributed and nowhere especially numerous, the Small Elephant Hawk-moth is nevertheless a familiar site in Hertfordshire for those who bother to look. During 2006 there were more sightings than usual (41 of the 150 records in the database at that time emanate from that year); this might indicate a range expansion or perhaps immigration from overseas.

Middlesex Notes:
The statement in Plant (2008) that this species is widespread and common in the western half of the county and also in the far north east, but absent from almost all of the eastern part, more or less remains valid; there are very few reports from the east.

Recorded in 32 (78%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 2024.
