Buff-tip
Phalera bucephala

(Linnaeus, 1758) 1994 / 71.025

General comments:
Widespread and usually common resident.

In 1937, Foster reported the Buff-tip as 'Generally abundant in all districts' and nothing much has changed. Lime trees are the most frequently reported pabulum, but this may be because they grow in streets and other places where the general public can see the distinctive caterpillars. In our woodlands and elsewhere, other trees are fed upon and the foodplant list is undoubtedly incomplete. Adults rarely attend light traps before midnight and are often the last species caught when packing up after an evening's trapping.
